The Protaper retreatment files by Dentsply Sirona are designed for easy debridement of the root canal and come with an active tip to facilitate initial penetration with slight apical pressure. These files are used to remove obturation material present in the tooth before initiating the canal reshaping process.
Each of the Protaper retreatment files serves a different function:
Protaper D1 files are used for the removal of coronal obturation.
Protaper D2 files are used for the removal of middle-zone obturation.
Protaper D3 files are used for the removal of apical-zone obturation.
Procedure:
In general, it is advisable to follow a series of guidelines for removing obturation material with Protaper retreatment files:
Withdraw the file frequently, inspect it, and remove debris from the flutes before continuing.
If the file cannot advance, use a hand file to overcome resistance and confirm canal permeability.
For eugenol-based soluble pastes, it is necessary to first soften the paste.
The recommended speed for using Protaper Retreatment files is:
For gutta-percha obturations or Thermafil/Protaper obturators: 500 rpm.
For zinc oxide-eugenol-based obturations: 250-300 rpm.
The files are distributed in blister packs of 6 units.
Note: NiTi files cannot be used to remove obturations of resin-based pastes.
